Three Retirement Numbers to Review Before You Retire

A spending number, reliable-income number, and downside-risk number can create a clearer retirement discussion.

1. Your realistic spending need

Start with recurring essentials, discretionary spending, taxes, healthcare, debt, and irregular costs such as home repairs. A gross-pay replacement target is often less useful than a complete spending estimate.

2. Your reliable income floor

List Social Security, pensions, annuities, and dependable part-time income separately from portfolio withdrawals. This helps show how much of the monthly need relies on investments.

3. Your downside margin

Run a higher-inflation and early-market-decline scenario. A plan with a comfortable average outcome can still have less flexibility during difficult early years.
